Bill Blackwood was born in Wakefield, West Yorkshire, in 1960, to a coal miner father and a mill worker mother-working-class roots that would later ground his performances with authenticity and grit.
At just 10 years old, Bill's passion for acting was ignited under the mentorship of accomplished character actor Frances Cox, who introduced him to the world of drama. His talent earned him a scholarship to Queen Elizabeth Grammar School in 1974, followed by studies at St John's College, York.
On the brink of his first BBC role in 1982, Bill made a bold choice-to serve his community by joining the Police Service. Over two distinguished decades, he was decorated by Her Majesty The Queen and honoured by courts and chief constables for his exceptional service.
After retiring due to an MS diagnosis, Bill led a number of high-profile, police-related national projects before finally returning to his first love-acting-in 2014.
Since then, he has built a compelling screen presence, first appearing in independent productions before landing a guest role in Bulletproof (Sky One). This opened the door to further guest star appearances in acclaimed TV dramas, and ultimately, to a series regular role in Channel 4/STV's hit prison drama SCREW.
In 2022, Bill was longlisted for the prestigious BAFTA Breakthrough programme, a testament to his rising influence in the industry.
Known for his grounded performances, rich life experience, and positive presence on set, Bill Blackwood is regarded as a consummate professional who brings both depth and warmth to every role he plays.
Alongside his screen work, Bill is an elected member of Equity's Deaf and Disabled Members Committee, a panellist for the Royal Television Society Awards selection team, and a voting member of the BIFA (British Independent Film Awards) academy.
